Why Play Is Essential to Early Learning
Play is how young children practise language, problem-solving, and friendship all at once.

To an adult, play can look like a break from learning. For a young child it is the learning. Language, problem-solving, and friendship are all practised at once when children play.
Play builds thinking skills
Stacking blocks, sorting shapes, and working out how to share one bucket between three friends are all early lessons in maths, logic, and negotiation.
Play builds language
Pretend play is full of new words. A child running a “restaurant” is practising questions, descriptions, and turn-taking in conversation.
Play builds confidence
In play, children set the rules and test their own ideas. That sense of “I can do this” carries straight into the classroom.
